Juan Tacuri, a 46-year-old Florida man, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for his role in promoting the Forcount cryptocurrency Ponzi scheme. U.S. District Judge Analisa Torres imposed the maximum statutory sentence, stating that if allowed by law, she would have issued an even longer term. The Ponzi scheme defrauded Latino communities both in the U.S. and abroad, causing immense financial and personal harm to the victims.
The Forcount cryptocurrency Ponzi scheme, which operated from 2017 to 2022, was designed to defraud investors by promising high returns on their cryptocurrency investments. The scheme primarily targeted Latino communities in countries like Ecuador, El Salvador, Panama, and Peru, as well as Latinos living in the U.S. Juan Tacuri, one of the top promoters of Forcount, pled guilty to wire fraud conspiracy in June 2023 and was sentenced in October 2024. He worked alongside other conspirators, including Francisley da Silva, who remains in custody in Brazil. Tacuri aggressively pushed the scheme, encouraging victims to invest more money, often through personal loans, with promises of high returns that never materialized.
During the sentencing hearing, which lasted over six hours, victims shared their emotional stories of loss, detailing how Tacuri’s actions destroyed their finances, families, and health. Tacuri’s demeanor during the hearing, including an inappropriate smirk, led to a sharp reprimand from Judge Torres, further emphasizing the harm he caused.
The 20-year sentence handed down to Tacuri reflects the serious impact of the Forcount Ponzi scheme on its victims and serves as a strong message that financial fraud, especially targeting vulnerable communities, will not be tolerated. While the sentencing brings some justice, the likelihood that victims will recover their money is slim. This case also highlights the risks associated with cryptocurrency investments, particularly in unregulated spaces where fraud can thrive. As cryptocurrencies continue to rise in popularity, investors should be cautious and thoroughly vet any investment opportunities. Tacuri’s deportation upon completing his sentence adds another layer of closure to a case that has caused widespread harm across multiple countries.
